Online Kelowna Poetry Contest

Celebrate Poetry Month with the Online Kelowna Poetry Contest for Adults! Are you feeling creative? Write a poem and submit your entry between April 1 to May 31st. Please email your poem to klreference@orl.bc.ca along with your name and phone number or drop hard copies submissions to your branch and we will make sure your poem will be send to Kelowna Downtown Library.

Submission Guidelines:

  1. There is no set theme. Let your imagination run wild!
  2. Poetry can be written in any poetic style and on any subject but must be in English.
  3. Only one poem per person. Multiple entries will not be accepted.
  4. The poem must be an original work by the person entering the contest. Plagiarism is a serious offense!
  5. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday , May 31st 16 at 8:00 p.m. 
  6. Poems containing language that is vulgar, offensive, or inappropriate will not be accepted.
  7. Prizes:

        1st prize- one book and a $25 Mosaic gift certificate

        2nd prize- two books

        3rd prize- one book

Paws 4 Stories @ Downtown Kelowna Library

Practice your reading skills by registering for a free 20-minute session to read with a certified St. John's Ambulance therapy dog! For ages 6 to 12.

Session times available are:
3:00 PM to 3:20 PM
3:30 PM to 3:50 PM
4:00 PM to 4:20 PM

When registering online, it will appear that you are registering for a 30 minute session, but the last 10 minutes of the session block are to provide a break for our dog. Sessions are only 20 minutes long.

Research shows that reading to a dog is tremendously motivational for kids and provides a calming, relaxed environment for children who may feel hesitant or anxious about reading.

Kids must be school-aged, able to read some words on their own, and feel comfortable reading with a dog and the dog’s adult handler.

Kevin Chong launches his new novel The Double Life of Benson Yu.  This work of metafiction follows Benson Yu, a writer, who loses control of his own narrative when he attempts to write the story of his fraught upbringing in 1980s Chinatown. Kevin Chong is the award-winning author of several books of fiction and nonfiction.. He currently lives in Vancouver and is an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia.

Corinna Chong launches her short story collection, The Whole Animal.  Her short fiction has appeared in magazines including Grain, Room, and Riddle Fence. She won the 2021 CBC Short Story Prize for "Kids in Kindergarten." Corinna’s first novel, Belinda's Rings, was published by NeWest Press in 2013. She lives in Kelowna, BC, where she is an English and Fine Arts Professor at Okanagan College.
