No time to write a novel? Then show off your writing skills by entering our microfiction contest!

Explore the world of storytelling in miniature and write an original story using no more than 100 words. A panel of judges appointed by the ORL will select prize-winning entries in Junior, Teen, and Adult divisions. Open to ORL card holders in the City of Kelowna. Sponsored by the Kelowna Friends of the Library.

Do you want to hang out with the sweetest dog ever? Come meet Rolo at the Salmon Arm library. Rolo is a miniature poodle and a certified St. John’s Ambulance Therapy Dog. He loves to be read to, petted and talked to. Rachel, his human, is also there to answer questions you may have about Rolo, therapy dogs, and more.

You can sign up for one-on-one sessions or drop-in and see if Rolo and Rachel are free for a chat.

Vernon Reads Book Club: Milkman by Anna Burns

Join us the 3rd Saturday of each month from 10:30am to 11:30am for an engaging and thought provoking discussion of the book of the month. Copies of the book are available at the 2nd floor Information Desk.

In November, we read Milkman.

In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her nearly-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But first brother-in-law, has sniffed it out, and middle sister becomes 'interesting'. To be interesting is to be noticed and to be noticed is dangerous. Milkman is a searingly honest novel told in prose that is as precise and unsentimental as it is devastating and brutal.

This 90 minute one-on-one appointment with our technical staff will help get you started using the equipment in our Makerspace.

Materials for training will be supplied where relevant (subject to availability,) although some equipment requires removable storage devices like a USB stick, portable hard drive, etc, to save your work.

Note that in Vernon, currently only two pieces of equipment require certification before use:

The rest of the makerspace equipment (including the soundbooth,) can be used without certification, after a brief orientation the first time you use them, although you *can* book this time to get extra help using any of our equipment.
